Ah, the new year. Resolutions, parties, and a month-long period where you’ll still write 2008 on everything until you finally get it right. But as we usher 2009 in, it’s hard to find much optimism in the dwindled-down magazines. Both Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar presented thinner-than-usual offerings this month, and the rest I’m not in the position to comment on. However, luckily for you, the covers are still mostly intact unless their titles have gone out of print. So, in that spirit, let’s take a look at those still standing.

I’m immensely jealous of the Target GO Collections. For most likely logistical reasons, the retail chain has yet to introduce a men’s equivalent. Their loss, am I right? Anyway, the latest such collection, designer-darling Thakoon Panichgul’s, is now available online. It’s a spring collection littered with fun tie-dye patterns and flirty silhouettes. There are few things as withstanding as denim has proven to be. While trends may come and go, there always seems to be a place for the ubiquitous fabric. One thing that makes it so durable is that anyone can wear it. It comes in all colors, fits, prices, and styles. So when I found out that the truly fabulous (seriously, I’m gonna talk to Meg about an honoree award) Alber Elbaz of Lanvin was pairing up with Acne Denim for a collection of denim pieces, I knew the results would be stunning. With everything from trench coats & blazers to dresses & bows, chances are these pieces will be coveted for many more years to come. I’ve noticed in my monthly near-overdose of fashion magazines lately that ruffled shoes are seemingly everywhere. There was a truly gorgeous pair by Alexander McQueen in last month’s (December) Harper’s Bazaar, but I can’t seem to find them for the life of me. So for now we’ll just focus on the equally stunning ones from Christian Louboutin for 3.1 Phillip Lim. When all of those frantic recession-themed articles are running in the magazines telling people to focus on “the staples,” it’s important to know that someone out there is still offering up a little personality. If you find yourself shoe shopping from the spring collections, keep in mind that hope springs eternal and pick up a pair of these.

I know you probably saw Giambattista Valli’s range of puffer jackets for Moncler months ago, but let’s take a moment to indulge my sheer admiration for Valli’s ability to create elegance (and for lack of a better word) out the wazoo. To stay warm, people are willing to wear the most ghastly creations if it means a little extra lining. The puffer jacket has been spoofed countless times for its ability to drown a person in its monstrous size. But as the Gamme Rouge collection teaches us, there’s always a better way. I’m not sure how much one of these babies will set you back, and to be perfectly honest I’m not sure I want to know. But for the sake of your fashion fantasies, to see my picks from the collection, click « Read the rest of this entry »
