I Pledge Allegiance to the Denim

January 30, 2009 § Leave a comment

Last week my grandfather was reminiscing about his U.S. Navy days when I came across this little fashion anomaly. The soldiers used to bleach their uniform pants, which were made of denim at the time, because they thought it made them look more experienced. I like to call it the origin of the faded jean trend.

A look from the Spring 2009 Givenchy Haute Couture collection

A look from the Spring 2009 Givenchy Haute Couture collection

In keeping with my play-it-by-ear attitude in the midst of the onslaught of collections we’re currently faced with, I’m writing today to highlight the Givenchy Haute Couture collection. I find that I’m usually a fan because they embrace a no-frills attitude, which is the perfect antidote for the jaw-dropping but often overdone couture collections. « Read the rest of this entry »

Best Dressed: SAG Awards 2009

January 27, 2009 § 1 Comment

With the low-key SGA awards, a lot of stars strayed away from the expected labels in favor of more fashion-friendly names. Among them: Prada (a high-profile but rarely red-carpet-worn brand) Jason Wu, and the old standard Azzedine Alaia. Sometimes the risks paid off (see my choices) but other times they fell flat.  But only the best ones made it in to my list.

Giambattista Valli was a perfect choice for Amy Adams, and Im hoping this isnt the last well see of him.

One of Those Days

January 26, 2009 § 1 Comment

Fact: I have a bookmark folder on my computer which contains 203  images (and counting) that I love for whatever reason.

Another Fact: Inspiration posts seem to be all the rage these days, so I figure why the hell not?

Get ready for image heavy!

This girl was one of the first of 9 students known as The Little Rock 9 who were the first individuals to desegregate the schools. I saw this picture in a history textbook and I was like ooh girl nice outfit!

Chloé for a Day

January 22, 2009 § Leave a comment

I’ve had a post planned for ages now where I’d regale you with the wonders of the never ending pre-fall season. Right now the devil’s on my shoulder saying “No Joey, wait until you’re absolutely sure all the collections are out, and then spend hours compiling your favorites, duhh!” I’ll spare you on the rest of the crazy, but with couture and ready to wear literally days away and the men’s shows currently happening, (too unimpressive to post about at this point) I figure that I might as well forget about it and just show you the one collection that I really love anyway. Hannah MacGibbon’s interpretation of Chloé has taken a while to fully bloom, but I’m very impressed with the pre-fall collection. She’s taken the out-there 80’s influences of the moment and brought them down to their most basic and unfussy form. The result is sharp and modern but in keeping with the classic elegant vibe MacGibbon has established. I’m looking forward to seeing the Fall show next month. For now, the full show can be viewed here, and you can see my favorites by clicking « Read the rest of this entry »

Best Dressed: The Golden Globes 2009

January 12, 2009 § Leave a comment

Usually I have a problem with best-dressed lists. Maybe it’s because I don’t agree with them 99% of the time, because the same unworthy candidates are picked every time no matter what they’re wearing. But it’s awards season now, and I’ve decided that, because I care, I’ll be providing my picks for best dressed at all the major events. Last night were the Golden Globes:
