Sometimes it’s hard to say goodbye, but that’s just what we’ll have to do to summer in the coming months. Rest assured that those in the magazine world are currently putting their finishing touches on the big September issues, but for now we have something of a transition on our hands. Though September is when the focus turns strictly on the fall collections, the August issues teeter between late summer fantasies and fall previews. So consider this your last chance to relish the insufferable heat wave and endless summer storms blissfully warm weather before it’s swept away from beneath you. You’ve been warned!

A strange phenomenon has swept the land. At first I was afraid that our generation had been so traumatized by the crazy “aughties” decade that we’ve reverted to childhood ways. Then this little guy fell into my possession and stole my heart-
What elementary school kid wouldn’t want a collection of Japanese erasers hiding in their pencil-case? Sure, they’re sold pretty much everywhere. But the fact that they usually only make brief appearances gives them at least somewhat of a sense of modesty.
Sillybandz are a whole different story… I wore these for a day to humor the “friends” that gifted them. They were then promptly stuffed into the bottom of a jewelry box until further notice. No matter how cute, they seem to posses a brainwashing factor, having graced the wrists of everyone from toddlers to middle-aged men, and now even celebs like Mary Kate Olsen, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Hayley Williams.

TV has a long, storied tradition of makeover shows at this point. Though they’re all a little silly and barely scratch the surface of what fashion and personal style can really mean to a person, none of them have managed to raise eyebrows so far. That may change, however, later this month. The CW will premiere its new makeover extravaganza Plain Jane on the 28th, starring British fashion journalist Louise Roe as an almost certainly stereotypically judgemental all-knowing style guru. And though the show promises to “transform one woman from the inside out to reveal a brand new woman,” it’s the little twist tacked on that’s bothersome. The end of every episode finds the transformed woman facing a secret crush in the hope of making a love connection. Yes, you read that right. This is a show actually based on the premise of slutting it up to impress potential suitors. And though there’s sure to be plenty of touching girl-ditches-glasses reveals, it seems a little fishy to be sending out the message that all a girl really needs to find love is a revamped wardrobe and a positive attitude. My question is, is Plain Jane really a good title? I think He’s Just Not That Into Your Ugly Clothes is far more apt.

Yesterday was July 4th, a date synonymous with Independence Day for most of you. But for a smaller yet no less fervent minority, the day meant something else: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest! Believe it or not, it’s a ninety-five year old tradition. And though it’s kind of repulsive to watch, there is something glorious about eating 54 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, as four-year champion Joey Chesnut did yesterday (his record is 68!). But his victory was short-lived. Long-time champion Takeru Kobayashi, who declined to participate due to contract disputes (? [!]) stormed the stage shortly after the competition, causing quite a ruckus in the process. Police had to intervene, he was taken to jail and kept in custody for a whole night, and it all made for one of the strangest 4th of July stories in history. A bizarre tale of competition, resentment, and crime, it’s not soon to be forgotten.

For those of us dreading the return of the fall months, we can take solace in the fact that Gossip Girl has some exciting tricks up its sleeves when it returns September 13th. Yup, you guessed it. Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, and Ed Westwick (Serena, Blair, and Chuck; respectively) have just begun shooting on location in Paris! And though the show left us this spring on a dark, dramatic note, it appears that things will be decidedly lighthearted when it returns (plus Jenny and Vanessa will be gone. Just sayin’). That is, if the clothing is any indicator. We’ll have to wait to see if that turns out to be true, but for now we have Blair & Serena’s American-in-Paris style to peruse.
